An innovative 'smart shrimp farm' that minimizes water pollution is being built inland, not coastal areas, and is drawing attention. According to SK
Specialty on the 12th, a smart shrimp farm with an annual yield of 20 tons is being built in Galsan-ri, Jangsu-myeon, Yeongju-si, Gyeongsangbuk-do, with the goal of completion in the first half of 2025. Kim Min-su, the CEO of the 'Korea Fisheries Research & Development Institute' ( KOF , ' STAXX ' selected social venture), which is promoting the construction, is a manager who majored in aquatic life medicine and worked as a researcher at the Fisheries Resources Research Institute and the Marine Resources Research Institute for 10 years. The ultimate goal of CEO Kim's business is to supply healthy, fresh shrimp farmed without environmental pollution to consumers. Shrimp farmed near the coast can cause environmental pollution problems due to the discharge of wastewater and antibiotics, but KOF can solve this by applying innovative water purification technology. This is because it has a closed circulation filtration system that can purify water in 30 minutes, which would take about 2 weeks in a general farm. This allows for the production of high-quality shrimp while reducing the environmental burden by repeatedly purifying and recycling water without discharging it. KOF has also succeeded in reducing uncertainties that may arise during the shrimp farming process by incorporating AI technology to monitor and predict water quality, shrimp growth , and disease status in real time. In addition, unlike the existing method of simply digging the ground and filling it with water, a precise system was established to independently manage water quality for each tank. CEO Kim, who took advantage of the strengths of inland farming that can reduce logistics costs and quickly supply fresh shrimp to consumers, applied for the STAXX project promoted by SK Specialty and established a business base in Yeongju. STAXX is a regional economic revitalization project promoted by SK Specialty with a contribution of 5 billion won and cooperation between Gyeongsangbuk-do, Yeongju City, and Impact Square. The goal is to discover and intensively foster 10 social ventures with business models that settle in Yeongju and utilize local resources or solve local problems, and to build a startup ecosystem where companies and the region coexist. STAXX , which highly evaluated KOF ’s eco-friendly aquaculture technology and vision for regional coexistence, made an impact investment of 500 million won. Yeongju City supported the site selection and licensing process, and SK Specialty supported the stabilization of the business by alleviating concerns of local residents about environmental pollution. The Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries also recognized KOF ’s innovative technology and selected it as a pilot smart aquaculture farm operator. In order to practice regional coexistence, KOF plans to expand its branch to Yeongju and procure raw materials in cooperation with local farmers, and its employees are also moving to Yeongju and nearby areas to participate in regional revitalization. It is also planning to expand the recruitment of local talent and support startups through aquaculture technology education in the future. CEO Kim said, “We will pioneer the possibility of success in the inland fisheries industry with eco-friendly smart aquaculture technology,” and “Once the aquaculture farm is completed in the first half of next year, we will supply fresh shrimp to local residents as a top priority.” An SK Specialty official said, " The STAXX project began with the belief that Yeongju must be livable for companies based here to function properly," adding, " We hope that the Yeongju economy will be revitalized as more companies, like KOF, realize both values of innovative technology and regional coexistence."
