Interviews with social venture entrepreneurs who are joining STAXX

The seventh hour is about the Korea Fisheries Research & Development Institute (KOF)  .

The Korea Fisheries Research & Development Institute aims to supply fresh live fish to local residents through smart aqua farm technology that allows fish farming even near cities.

We met with Kim Min-su, the CEO of the Korea Fisheries Research & Development Institute, to hear more details.

Q. Hello, please explain what kind of company the Korea Fisheries Research & Development Institute is.

Hello.

The Korea Fisheries Research & Development Institute is a team that started a business with the technology to raise shrimp using smart aqua farms (smart aquaculture) near cities.

What is the most important thing when raising fish? It is important to manage these three things well: water quality, growth, and disease .

We manage these three well and have a system that allows farming in any area of the city.

We are a team that delivers fresh shrimp to consumers within 30 minutes to 1 hour.

Q. I am not familiar with the term ‘smart aqua farm’.

Could you explain in simple terms what a 'smart aqua farm' is?

The general method of farming is to simply dig the ground, fill it with water, and add feed.

Up until now , we have used a lot of traditional methods when cultivating crops .

In the case of our team's smart aqua farm system , we can manage the water quality, growth, and diseases required for aquaculture.

This is a system that  independently filters water quality for each tank and manages it so that fish can grow well ecologically .

Most smart aquaculture systems focus only on monitoring and controlling when problems related to aquaculture occur, such as water quality, growth, and disease, but our team's smart aquafarm can quickly and immediately resolve problems.

It has the advantage of being able to provide problem-solving solutions .

Q. What are the unique differentiating points of the Korea Fisheries Research and Development Institute’s ‘Smart Aqua Farm’?

First of all, we seem to be really good at raising fish.
In particular, we think we are a team with the ability to purify water very well.
Generally, if 2 to 5 purification power is needed to purify 1 unit of water,

We can purify water quickly and easily with a purification power of only about 0.3 to purify 1 part of water.
And our differentiating point is that we can purify water so that it is non-toxic and create an ecological environment where fish can grow well, and
raise healthy fish.

Q. When you think of earwax, you think of the ocean, but what if you use a smart aqua farm?

You can challenge yourself to fishing inland anywhere in the country?

You mentioned returning to the fishing village, but in fact, it is common for ordinary people to return to the fishing village (people who used to live in the city )

It is not an easy challenge .  The barrier to entry is high and there seems to be a level of technical difficulty.

However , we  are helping anyone to easily start a business by providing a standardized system  .

Also , by standardizing the hardware and software required for the form,

We provide our solutions to enable fishermen to farm their fish stably.

Q. I know that the CEO is a sea man .

What prompted you to start a solution for inland fishermen ?

I was born in Busan and grew up looking at the ocean a lot. So I really liked the ocean.

The idea naturally came to me, 'I should raise fish near the sea.'

During this time,  we came to understand customers' needs for fresh live fish .

In order to do these things, the logistics and distribution of live fish are most important. In the end, near the city ,

Only by producing seafood close to the consumer's desired location can consumers enjoy healthy, clean, and fresh seafood.

I thought I could receive it immediately , so I developed the technology to match that point .

Q. Do you have any plans to expand globally in the future ?

First of all, the issue that is most pressing these days is the issue of radioactive contaminated water discharge.

In addition, there is ocean pollution, disease outbreaks in fish farming, etc.

In addition, in our country, 80% to 90% of aquaculture is done near the coast.

In fact , from the consumers' point of view, it seems that it will be difficult to readily eat fish caught from the sea in the future.

As a result, interest in and awareness of these aquaculture products will inevitably increase, and aquaculture near land will be in the spotlight. Many of these projects have already begun in other countries.

Many land-based aquaculture projects have been launched in European countries, Singapore, the United States, and other countries.

In fact, our team is also trying to follow this global trend. We aim to supply fresh live fish from inland areas such as Las Vegas and Manhattan in the US, and Austria to places that need seafood, such as Michelin restaurants located within 30 minutes to 1 hour from urban areas.

Q. Are there any achievements unique to the Korea Fisheries Research and Development Institute that you would like to boast about?

It is said that it usually takes 2 to 4 weeks to purify water quality.

As I mentioned earlier, our team is good at purifying water . We can purify water within 1 to 3 days.

In addition, we have recently further developed our R&D capabilities

We have been able to demonstrate the technology to purify water quality within 20 minutes.

We have created an opportunity to increase growth and stability in water purification.

Q.  How do you feel about being selected as a STAXX tenant ?

I have high expectations . First of all, we have verified a lot of POC (Proof of Concept, a process of verifying from a technical perspective whether a new project is actually feasible) so far.

Through this STAXX project, we will build our smart fish farm in Yeongju.

We are proud that we can provide healthy, fresh seafood to local people .

It is a very challenging situation, but I will work hard and achieve good results.

Q. What kind of value do you want to create at STAXX ?

What we wanted to do together when we came to Yeongju was to act as providers.

Based on a slogan that suits local production and consumption, we produce clean seafood.

I want to act as a provider that can provide stable supplies to local people.

Based on these roles, local commercial districts are also revitalized, and various companies are established in the Yeongju area based on this building (STAXX).

I would like to create opportunities for young people to come.

Please look forward to the wonderful changes we will create in Yeongju!
