[Joint planning by Electronic Times Internet and Seoul Economic Promotion Agency] Recently, the industry is striving for ESG (environment, society, governance) management along with the 4th industrial revolution that integrates various elements based on IT , and is seeking cooperation with startups with innovative ideas. Startups that reflect the latest trends such as artificial intelligence ( AI ), virtual reality ( AR ), robots, fintech, and bio supported by Seoul Startup Hub Seongsu are recognized for their unique innovative ideas and competitiveness, and are repeatedly receiving love calls from VCs and large corporations for partnership even in the frozen investment environment . In collaboration with Seoul Startup Hub Seongsu, this magazine has prepared the 'ESG Start -UP in Seongsu' corner to highlight influential startups that are conveying ESG innovative ideas to the industry , and will look into the innovativeness of these companies. 〈Editor's Note〉
The Korea Fisheries Research & Development Institute is a smart aquaculture technology platform company established by a research team with experience in aquaculture , IoT
, etc., led by CEO Kim Min-su, an aquaculture disease management specialist. Starting with ‘Smart Aqua Farm’, which combines domestic environmental indicators based on big data based on the know-how of aquaculture farms, the company recently launched the smart shrimp aquaculture development and distribution business brand ‘ FICL ’ and is advancing its business.
In particular, through the development of inland aquaculture farms through the FICL brand, it is entering the establishment of a stable supply system for aquaculture resources, and is focusing the attention of the related industry along with the confirmation of effectiveness.
-Founding story
▲CEO Kim Min-su discovered an industrial vision in a conversation with a shrimp importer and distributor he knew from his childhood and started a business while accumulating related knowledge.
In particular, while writing a research paper on aquaculture environment based on the Bio-Floc system, he thought that various forms of smart aquaculture technology were needed in Korea, which is still repeating analog aquaculture methods with an apprenticeship approach.

- Activities of the year
▲ Last year, we successfully completed a 30-pyeong test along with the standardization of smart aquaculture by combining aquaculture equipment hardware and big data-based software.
This year, we have fully approached the smart shrimp aquaculture distribution business with the brand name FICL . We have achieved results such as conducting shrimp production and live fish distribution in Chuncheon, an inland area.
Based on this, we have signed a growth support agreement with Yeongju City and SK Specialty, and are preparing for full-scale smart aquaculture by securing a space of more than 1,000 pyeong in Yeongju, Gyeongbuk.
- What is the core value of the 'smart aquaculture' of the Korea Fisheries Research & Development Institute?
▲ The importance of safe aquatic resources due to environmental pollution such as microplastics and Fukushima contaminated water is increasing. In addition, the decrease in the aquaculture population and the deterioration of profitability are leading to attention on smart aquaculture.
However, the adoption rate itself is low due to facility costs and the sense of alienation from unfamiliar systems. Our business viability is based on the linkage of big data-based aquaculture farm know-how, systems that fit domestic environmental standards, and IoT (Internet of Things) frameworks suitable for growth, allowing anyone to engage in aquaculture stably and supply reliable food.

-What are your future plans?
▲The domestic shrimp farming market size, including overseas imports, is 35 trillion won per year, while live shrimp farming is worth about 200 billion won per year. Even if we only look at shrimp, which is considered a representative food among aquatic resources, there is still plenty of room for expansion. First, we plan to focus on expanding the market in the Gyeongsangnam-do and Gyeongsangbuk-do regions next year, along with the completion of the smart shrimp farm in Yeongju, Gyeongsangbuk-do, which is currently being prepared.
After that, we will induce the influx of directly managed farms centered on inland distribution hubs, returning fishermen who wish to start a business, and second- and third-generation farmed fishermen, and we will grow the market by changing the type of products handled from imported frozen to domestic live fish farming.
-Future ambitions or determination ▲ I want to provide safe and fresh aquatic products to consumers within 30 minutes to 1 hour through land-based aquaculture production . -What I want from the industry and beyond ▲The need for safe and fresh aquatic products has been increasing recently. Aquatic products produced in an environment where water quality, growth, and disease are well managed are safe and nutritious. I hope that many people will pay more attention to the formation of industrial ecosystems and consumption.
